O2 is reported to be planning a price cut for the iPhone in the UK, following on from a much larger cut in the retail price in Germany last week. The trade magazine, Mobile Today reports that the price of the 8GB model will be cut from £269 to £169 (US$333), which puts the UK price below the retail cost in the USA. It was not reported if the 16GB model, which currently sells for £329 would be reduced in price as well. The price cut is expected to be announced tomorrow. Speculation is rife that the price cuts are to clear out the remaining stocks of the handsets prior to a long awaited launch of a 3G model of the handset. Piper Jaffray analyst Gene Munster in a note to clients last week, said iPhones couldn’t be found at Apple’s hundreds of U.S. retail stores. Piper’s Munster reminded his clients in the research note that when Apple products disappear from stores, an update of that same product often follows in a few days. Given that history, Munster sees an 80% chance that Apple will soon introduce an iPhone for 3G networks. And hopefully we will get a price cut here in US as well.
