Sprint Commends FCC for Work on Country’s First National Broadband Plan

Today the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) announced the release of the country’s first National Broadband Plan. The plan includes recommendations which are designed to improve healthcare, education, energy and the environment, public safety and homeland security for all Americans. By generating greater competition, the plan promises to create jobs and investment in the broadband economy. Sprint commends the FCC for its work. As the country’s only national wireless carrier offering 4G broadband service, Sprint is committed to offering better broadband solutions to consumers, businesses, government and public safety users. 

Sprint is particularly pleased that the FCC has included a set of pro-competitive recommendations in the plan. Sprint believes that expeditious adoption of these recommendations will increase broadband competition, which in turn will create jobs, spur capital investment in new broadband networks, and bring lower broadband prices and increased capacity to customers.

“With the release of the National Broadband Plan, the FCC gave America a roadmap to a better broadband future. Sprint applauds Chairman Genachowski, his fellow Commissioners, and staff at the FCC for producing a comprehensive set of recommendations designed to expand the availability of high speed affordable broadband across the U.S.,” said Vonya B. McCann, senior vice president, Government Affairs, Sprint.

“At Sprint, we share many of the FCC’s goals as outlined in the plan. Over the next several days, we will be reviewing the plan’s specific recommendations and look forward to working with the FCC and Congress to expand affordable high-performance broadband services,” McCann continued.

The National Broadband Plan addresses a variety of issues critical to expansion of affordable broadband communications including special access reform, intercarrier compensation reform and universal service reform. There also are important recommendations to improve the FCC’s spectrum management processes and procedures – critical steps to assuring that wireless providers have enough spectrum to meet the nation’s demand for mobile broadband services both now and in the future. Significantly, the plan recommends that Congress appropriate funds to help build and operate a national wireless public safety communications service with broadband and interoperability capabilities – an action Sprint has long advocated.
