Sprint Nextel Corp.on Tuesday unveiled its own competitor to the popular Apple iPhone, a touchscreen device built by Samsung Telecommunications called the Samsung Instinct. The Samsung Instinct looks somewhat similar to the iPhone and is supposed to function in the same way. It has a “virtual” keyboard, can surf the Web and plays music and video. Sprint said the phone would be available in June exclusively from the company’s stores. Customers who want to buy the Instinct would have to sign up for an annual plan that costs $69 a month, which includes unlimited texting and Internet access. Sprint alos says that they will spend about three times more on marketing the Instinct than on its biggest phone launch last year. Sprint also took the unusual step of leading the design of the device’s user controls, known as the user interface, with an aim to making the phone as easy as possible to use.
