The first quarter of 2008 has seen a shuffling in the rankings of mobile handset vendors in India.

Nokia continues to be the overwhelmingly dominant player with around 70% market share. Sony Ericsson is still in second place with 8%. The thing is that Samsung have now overtaken Motorola to take up 3rd spot, something which is similar to what we have seen in other countries. Samsung now has 7% market share, while Motorola’s is around 6%.

Samsung plans to double its market share in India by the end of 2008 and it wouldn’t be unwise to guess that a whole host of new devices covering the whole spectrum of the market will be released.

Motorola however will need to sell large numbers of handsets in order to buck the trend and reclaim its position in the rankings. Industry commentators will undoubtedly be following all this very closely.
