TomTom will not be following the footsteps of Garmin as they do not plan on releasing their own brand of handsets. The personal navigation device (PND) maker are apparently more interested in focusing on the development of the core software and further strenthen its services and content for in-car PND devices. All this is according to a top exec at TomTom Asia.
The executive said that while they will still concentrate on the PND market, the handset market is a potential market for personal navigation apps and he also noted that TomTom will build on its cooperation with handset makers by providing necessary solutions.
TomTom already has solutions built for both the Symbian S60 and Windows Mobile platforms. Also they are cooperating with handset manufacturers like Assutek and HTC and one suspects that they could now move to creating software for other platforms like BlackBerry, Android, iPhone and Symbian UIQ.
