The not-so-new idea of sending different scents and smells alongside your cellphone message has proven to have great staying power and it looks like it won’t be going away any time soon. A group of German technology developers have announced that they have patented hardware that would let cellphone users send smells along with SMS or MMS messages.

The technology has been under development for eight years and it has now come to fruition with the securing of the patent. By integrating a chip filled with approximately 100 different smells into mobile phones. The gadgetry could send the smell of a flower along with a picture MMS of a bunch of flowers. The chip could be on the commercial market possibly as early as 2010.

Naturally we will have to wait for compatible smelly handsets loaded with this chip to hit the public before all this smelling becomes a reality.

BTW, scent-message recipients can choose to reject an incoming smell loaded message.
