Palm releasing a CDMA version of the Treo Pro..!

File this one under “rumor” and a very hopeful reporting is that fellow ODM partner HTC is working on a CDMA version of the Treo Pro for Verizon and/or Sprint: Furthermore, Palm is planning to launch CDMA (code division multiple access) version of Treo Pro series phone in the future for CDMA telecom service providers, like Verizon, Wireless and Sprint. The phone will also be supplied by HTC. There has been some other rumor-mongering that Verizon has canceled their planned roll out of their Treo 800w. Reasons are murky ranging from “it could not pass carrier testing” to, you guessed it, they are awaiting the Treo Pro. Perhaps. Though without any real evidence we’ll just have to sit back and see what happens. Though considering the general warm welcome the Treo Pro has received so far, it would appear to be a good idea to get a CDMA version out ASAP.

E-TEN will Releases New Devices - Glofiish X610 & Glofiish V900

Did you know that putting a password on your iPhone is completely useless, as someone can enter your phone’s data with a couple of taps? One method is realesed whereby en Evildoer can bypass the iPhone’s lock screen by tapping the emergency call icon once, then tapping the home button twice. From there you’ll have access to the phone’s data. This can all be avoided by making it so that pressing the home button takes you back to the unlock screen (or iPod).

Adobe Unveils Photoshop.com Mobile Beta

Adobe released the app today in conjunction with Photoshop.com, an online corrolary to its best-selling photo editor, Photoshop Elements. Available for Windows, Photoshop Elements 7 makes it quick and easy to organize, edit, create and share amazing photos with others by leveraging the editing power of Photoshop software, the professional standard for image editing. When it launches toward the end of September, Photoshop.com Mobile will be available for the following six Windows Mobile devices: Samsung Blackjack I, Samsung Blackjack II, Motorola MOTO Q 9h, MOTO Q Music 9m, Palm Treo 700 w/wx, and Palm Treo 750. More Windows Mobile handsets will be supported by year end 2008.

NTT DoCoMo bags the Sharp SH706iw 3G cell phone

We have seen some pretty impressive Sharp handsets adorn NTT DoCoMo’s lineup and the SH706iw continues the tradition with some features that should sound droolworthy elsewhere in the world too. This slider has an expansive 3-inch VGA 480×854-pixel display and a touchpad for smoother interaction. You will also find Dolby Mobile sound system to complement that big, beautiful touchscreen with other usual goodies like 1Seg TV tuner and microSD/SDHC support, but the camera comes as a disappointment with only a 2-megapixel lens, while the previous model had climbed up to 3.2 megapixels. Being 3G capable, the SH706iw can handle 3G calls for 195 minutes, video calls for up to 105 minutes with a standby time of 490 hours.The lucky Japanese won’t have to wait long as the Sharp SH706iw will be available from NTT DoCoMo starting September 1 at a price that hasn’t been revealed yet.

iPhone ads withdrawn for false info: ASA orders Apple to withdraw iPhone ads that claim a “full” web experience

The Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) has upheld complaints about an Apple advert that claims the iPhone offers the “full” internet. Apple has been forced to withdraw the advert. Two consumers contended that because the iPhone did not support Flash or Java, websites that relied on this software could not be viewed in full, and therefore the advert was misleading. By not explaining the handset’s limitations, the ASA said the broad claim of full access to the internet was false. Apple declined to comment.

3 unveils second Skypephone

3 has launched its second Skypephone, the S2 (pictured), with a new user interface to enable easy movement between internet applications. It can also be used as a mobile broadband dongle. The user interface includes a ’switcher’ key to flip between applications in a ‘carousel’ style. 3 claims this takes out the need for fiddly menus and makes the internet easier to use. The handset includes applications to help run internet services such as Facebook, Google and Windows Live Messenger from the front of the phone, as well as the ability to use the device as a mobile broadband dongle.

Tatung VOIP phone concept adds style to utility

We have seen quite a number of concept cell phones come our way, but this should be the first time we are seeing a VOIP phone go the imagination way. The Tatung VOIP concept phone, designed by Nova Design, has already won the 2008 IF, Idea, and Red Dot awards for its sexy and sleek looks, but if it becomes a reality, it won’t have to survive with its futuristic design alone. This internet phone has Bluetooth and WiFi wireless connections to hook you up to your favorite VOIP provider for long hours of low-cost chattering. Those flushed numbers on a touch keypad add all the more to its ultramodern appearance along with the false antenna, not to mention the customizable casing.

Nokia 6650 flip phone picked up by AT&T

It was about time one more Nokia made an appearance here in the good old USA, with the last S60-powered device to grace the States being the N75 almost a year ago. We hope Nokia doesn’t take the same route with the Nokia Tube and include this side of the Atlantic in their grand plans too. Fresh off its European tour on T-Mobile, the Nokia 6650 has decided to pay us a visit bearing AT&T’s flag. Apart from bringing a bit of joy to the Symbian lovers Stateside, the Nokia 6650 comes packed with a 2.2-inch QVGA display with a secondary 160×128 on the front of the clamshell, a 2-megapixel lens, HSDPA 850/1900 support, and GPS with AT&T Navigator suport. There’s no information on when or for how much it will be available though, but we will keep you posted as soon as we come across that little bit of knowledge.

Verizon outs Windows Mobile 6.1 update for XV6800, keeps GPS locked down

Hot on the heels of AT&T’s Windows Mobile 6.1 update for the HTC Tilt, Verizon has released its very own WM6.1 upgrade on an unsuspecting public. The new ROM for the XV6800, Verizon’s version of the HTC Titan, doesn’t feature any surprises, but will hook your device up with the usual array of enhancements, including threaded SMS, improved battery life, and more. Sadly, Verizon has kept the GPS functionality locked down so anyone hoping to make use of VZNavigator, or any other 3rd party nav apps will find themselves SOL.

Klausner sues Google, Verizon, and others for visual voicemail

Klausner Technologies, headed up by Judah Klausner, has filed suit against Google, Verizon, and a handful of other communications companies, claiming infringement on his visual voicemail patents. Klausner holds patents on a voicemail system capable of “applying a graphical way of interacting with voicemail messages that allow it to be used like email”. Verizon, who anticipated the lawsuit based on Klausner’s previous cases, filed a lawsuit two weeks ago, seeking to have Klausner’s patent declared invalid.

Hi5 Goes Mobile and Takes on the World

The internationally popular social network Hi5 launched a mobile version (m.hi5.com) of its website this week. The mobile website will allow Hi5 users to send and receive messages, add / request new friends, view friend’s profiles and make comments and also view the real-time status of other members online. With support for 26 languages, Hi5’s mobile website targets the growing number of international users, who unlike their American counterparts, are more likely to use a mobile device to access the internet than a PC. Creating this “culturally relevant” social network and providing it to the world has been Hi5’s strategy and it has worked. According to ComScore, hi5 grew 79% in the first half of 2008 with the number of unique visitors increasing from 31.4 million in December 2007 to 56.4 million in June 2008. That is more than twice the growth rate of any of the other top 10 social networks! Keep those rates up and they will be poised on the cusp of world domination.

RIM vs Apple vs Palm : RIM is still winning

A recent survey of 1,947 respondents involved with IT spending in their organization was conducted August 11-21 shows that the Apple iPhone is beginning to gain traction in the corporate marketplace even as RIM maintains a big market share lead.

While the success of RIM’s upcoming new product launches could put most of these issues to rest, the first new RIM launch - the Bold - is still not yet available in the U.S. When you place this in the context of the current ‘take no prisoners’ stock market, RIM could be in for a bumpy ride with investors short term - until they have some proof that RIM’s new products are being successfully brought to market.

Apple (17%), on the other hand, continues to show considerable momentum in terms of corporate planned purchases - up 4-pts from previously. In short, while recent ChangeWave consumer surveys have shown the 3G iPhone having a huge impact on consumer demand, the current results show the iPhone is beginning to gain real traction in the corporate market as well.

In yet another positive for Apple, 19% report the release of the 3G iPhone has made their company More Likely to purchase Apple products in the future - only 1% say Less Likely. Thus, the 3G iPhone release appears to be having a positive ‘halo effect’ in terms of improved overall corporate purchasing intentions for Apple products in general.

1. World Championship for throwing mobile phones

Many of us have had the urge to fling a troublesome phone far, far away - but only a few have the skills to do it professionally. The sport of Mobile Phone Throwing began in Finland in 2000, presumably as a combination of a joke and a few people entering the final stages of terminal boredom. The world record is currently 95 meters, held by Chris Hughff, so even if you do think it’s stupid don’t say it to his face or he could probably hurl a Nokia right through you.

2. Fake it and break it

A sensible shopper (or a sailor on shore leave) knows that anything too cheap will cost you more in the long run. One extreme example of this is counterfeit Nokia battery packs, which have a nasty tendency to catch fire or explode - without even the benefit of a cool Mission Impossible voice intoning “This message will self-destruct in five seconds.”

3. Annoy an Australian

Apparently unaware of the existence of the internet, Australian Peter Mackenzie snuck sleazy snaps of sunbathing women by strolling along the beach with his cameraphone, pretending to talk but actually angling the camera to capture pictures. The first part of the deception should be obvious, as anybody so pathetic as to do that clearly has no-one they could be calling. Peter was busted when the boyfriend of one of the targeted ladies got suspicious. Mackenzie was arrested, fined, and the offending phone was ordered destroyed - and he still got off lightly, because when you annoy an Australian man and the list of things destroyed doesn’t include “your face”, you’re doing well.

4. Use it in Court

Indiana attorney John Bloom lost his phone in an courthouse earlier this year - and lost it forever. Confiscated under the “no cellphones” policy of the court, one we can only hope will be extended to cinemas as soon as possible, Judge Fran Gull ordered the handset destroyed. Because judges get to do that sort of thing. She presumably went on to issue a statement assuring the world that her name was not made up.

5. Flamethrower!

The world championship of phone-throwing might sound impressive - but why throw a phone, when you can FLAMEthrow it? We’d like to think that’s what these guys were thinking, but let’s face it - they’ve got a goddamn flamethrower. Their entire lives are based around the question “What have we not yet incinerated with our kickass flamethrower?” Thanks to YouTube, their pyromaniac joy is no longer limited to themselves and whatever imaginary friends the propane fumes cause them to hallucinate.

Casio’s 8 megapixel Exilim W63A cellphone gets FCC approved

First off, the chances of this Japanese super-phone coming to the US or anywhere else outside of Nippon is slim. FCC approval or not, it’s likely only being tested for global roaming. However, as slim is its chances are, they’ve improved dramatically now that Japan’s government is behind a push to promote its twisty, folding phones abroad. This Exilim-branded Casio / Hitachi mashup sports an 8 megapixel camera with any luck, it’s using that new Omnivision sensor meant to revolutionize cameraphones. As followup to the W53CA, this 3G W63CA flip will no doubt feature the same high-resolution, 800 x 480 pixel swiveling display of its cousin. With autumn nearing, we expect to see the W63A announced any day in a typical shotgun blast of seasonal phones from KDDI.
