Three behemoths in the mobile business – Vodafone, Softbank and China Mobile – have come together to establish a Joint Innovation Lab (JIL) in order to “promote the development of new mobile technologies, applications and services.”
The JIL will work mainly on the quickly expanding sectors of mobile internet services, like mobile widgets. In the beginning, the JIL plans to develop a platform for mobile widgets to stimulate the creation of new innovative services that will be able to make use of the unique capacities of mobile operators. The JIL is also open to collaboration with developers and vendors in the development of new services and applications.
The creation of the JIL and its completion now depends on regulatory green-lights and certain customary closing conditions.
