Rhode Island gets a Budget Crisis after baning on mobile phone use while driving
We already got the news that Rhode Island has banned cell phones use while driving and that ban now causing an unexpected side effect – a windfall in driving fines. Rhode Island was planning on gathering approximately US$6.2 million in fines based on an estimate of 100,000 fines per year ( ouuuuch ) which had been expected to boost state coffers this year and next has now been reduced – to a mere $437,000. State Budget Officer Rosemary Booth Gallogly said that: “With a budget that has so much pain, we need to make sure it’s as correct as possible,” House Majority Leader Gordon D. Fox said through a spokesman. “We need to rely on numbers that are reliable and accurate and not just a guess.” Of course, the other side to the story is that the ban, if implemented would be more likely to be complied with by drivers than originally expected.
