Mobile TV subscribers in France now number 1.2m (1m + 200k)

As of December 2007, there were 1.2m French Mobile TV subscribers, consisting of 1 million Orange subscribers, and 200,000 from SFR: Screendigest. Those figures put France ahead of Italy as of Christmas 2007 in terms of the numbers of Mobile TV subscribers.

It is apparent that both operators saw growth rates in excess of 40% in the fourth quarter of 2007. This can be attributed to the fact that each operator launched unlimited mobile data bundles, covering TV, music, and video services, amongst other facilities.

Furthermore, Screendigest points out that these figures have been achieved using 3G networks, and that if these growth rates are maintained, they would not be manageable on the current network infrastructures. Upcoming events such as the European Football Championship and the Beijing Olympics are forecasted to push this demand even higher. In conclusion, Screendigest has reservations about a DVB-H broadcast network being deployed nationwide before the end of this year.
