Alcatel-Lucent is to close NJ facility after fifth straight quarterly loss
Alcatel-Lucent officials plan to close the company’s Hanover Township facility by the end of next year. Officials with the Paris-based telecommunications gear maker say the 2,100 workers at the site will be moved about 10 miles south to the company’s North American headquarters in Murray Hill.
Company officials say the move was needed because both sites have been underused for years. The workers being moved are mostly research and support staff. Alcatel-Lucent’s predecessor, Bell Labs, started operations in Hanover Township 82 years ago. Township officials say as many as 3,500 people worked there in the early 1980s.
In the past week, Alcatel-Lucent reported a fifth straight quarterly loss, predicting a flat telecommunication equipment market for the year.
