Light-weight laser-based head mounted display patented by Apple

Such head-mounted displays are anything but breaking news material, and the possibility of presenting content from a mobile phone at nose distance isn’t either. However, this new patent application from Apple does away with the load by separating the “laser engine” from the goggle-like head mounted display and thus actually makes wearing one feasible for the enthusiastic consumer. Below is an official statement:

A user simply plugs their handheld video player such as the iPod manufactured by Apple Computer of Cupertino, Calif., into the compact laser engine attached to their belt, and places the headset on their head. The user then selects a video to be played at the handheld video player (viewing through transparent display elements).”

And when they are not being used, the goggles serve as regular eyeglasses or sunglasses because with this device there is no projection of image or video on to the lens. And that does get you thinking about the sheer array or possibilities! When not in use, the goggles can be used as normal eyeglasses or sunglasses, as no image or video is projected onto the lens.
