It looks like Apple is set to bump the camera resolution in the next iPhone up to 5-megapixels. OmniVision, Apple’s current supplier for the 3.2-megapixel camera in the
iPhone 3GS, has reportedly been given orders for its second sensor upgrade in a year with expectation that an iPhone using the higher resolution will ship in the second half of 2010. In fact, OmniVision shipped 65 million image capture sensors to Apple this year. They expect another 40-45 million iPhones alone to ship in 2010, which would make it a very good year for the Taiwanese company.
The speculation is the new OV5650 sensor should be able to give better images in low light conditions with as little noise as possible, and should be able to deliver 1080p video recording
then Apple can bridge one of the obvious gaps that has existed between the iPhone and Motorola Droid. Incidentally, Droid’s 5MP camera has been one of the many features that Verizon has exploited to attack the iPhone in its ad campaigns
