A patent holding firm, WiAV Solutions has launched a lawsuit in the Eastern District of Virginia against Apple, Research in Motion and Palm alleging the companies are infringing on several of its GSM patents. The patents - two held by WiAV Solutions and eight exclusively licensed from another company, Mindspeed - all appear to relate to methods for detecting voice activity during a phone call and monitoring silences during the conversation and then adjusting phone battery consumption. The lawsuit cannot proceed however unless Mindspeed actually agrees to join in the action, and WiAV Solutions is petitioning the court to force Mindspeed to join the action as an “involuntary plaintiff”. Little is known about WiAV Solutions as a company, although the company CEO, is recorded by The Huffington Post as having made a political donation to the Hillary Clinton Democratic nomination campaign.
